Media Coach Jodie Heisner" style="float:left; padding:0px 10px 10px 0px;" />

Former ABC15 TV producer and reporter, Jodie Heisner now owns and runs Bottom Line Media Coaching. This busy mom of two has a decade of broadcast journalism under her belt and now works behind the scenes, prepping clients for on-screen interviews. When it comes to her beauty routine, Jodie keeps her fresh, youthful glow without dropping stacks of cash. Read how!

So, let’s start with the basics. What do you keep in your beauty bag?
I don’t believe you have to spend a fortune to look beautiful. Most of my favorite products come from the drugstore, and I’m OK with that! Some of my must-haves include Maybelline Falsies Mascara because it gives me lush, 1960s cat eyes; Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum for keeping me wrinkle-free; Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse & Matte Powder in creamy neutral because it works great for high-definition TV and is comparable to Mac Studio Fix products; and Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer SPF 30. I am blonde and fair, so SPF is a MUST for me. I’ve been using this product for years!

Is there anything you’re dying to add to your collection?
I really want to try Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. I hear it’s like a shot of Espresso for your face. Anything to keep me from looking as tired as I really am sounds great to me!

Where is your favorite place to buy beauty products?
Honestly, Walgreens! I wish I had time and money to hit the department stores, but like many busy working moms out there, I just don’t. I am making it OK for all of the other undercover drug store beauty shoppers out there.

We love that you’re budget-minded! Where do you go when you want to really indulge?
About every six months I love to spend the day at the spa and get a great massage, mani, pedi and facial. I love the Spa Avania at Hyatt Regency Gainey Ranch when I am going for the whole experience, but when I need an amazing stress-busting massage, I love Cloud 9 Salon and Spa.

But before you run out the door, you want to make sure that your skin is looking beautiful and fresh. Angela Justus, aesthetician and skincare expert from Paradise Valley Skin Klinic, tells us how to get flawless, sun-kissed skin.

Use natural, gentle skincare products. Look for cleansers that are mild, non-detergent, and fragrance free. Scan the labels of products to see if they contain natural ingredients such as cucumber, aloe, green tea extract, or tea tree oil. Using these types of products will give you a clear and healthy complexion without irritating skin.

Track down a moisturizer with SPF. Your daily moisturizer should not only hydrate your skin, but also protect it from the sun’s harmful rays. Look for a moisturizer that is at least SPF15.

Use a gentle exfoliator twice a week. This will slough away dead skin cells to reveal a fresh and glowing face. Another way to achieve gorgeous skin is by eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are not only delicious, but are great for improving your skin condition. Even better, they not only give you flawless skin, but they get you bikini-ready as well! In addition to drinking lots of water, try incorporating berries, carrots, and mangoes into your diet.

There are lots of simple tips and tricks to achieve a flawless face for summer. Make sure to use gentle products that contain natural ingredients, always choose a moisturizer that contains SPF, exfoliate regularly, and try to incorporate fruits and veggies into your diet. These easy tweaks will leave you looking fresh, healthy, and glowing just in time for the summer months!

In my home, I go by many names — Princess of the Pooper Scooper, Lordess of the Laundry, Diva of the Dishwasher. But the name I answer to most often is Queen Bee (at least in my mind anyway). When all heck breaks loose and you need to be reminded of who you really are, whip up a few of these tub teas and soak away all those other responsibilities you’ve somehow inherited in your reign. Perfect for shower gifts, Mother’s Day brunch favors and thank you notes.

Here’s what you need:

1/2 cup powered whole milk

1/2 cup dried hibiscus or rose petals

3 to 5 drops rose essential oil

heat sealable tea bags

Here’s what you do:

Mix the milk and essential oil together until evenly distributed. Gently mix in the dried petals. Put a few spoonfuls of the mixture in a large, sealable teabag and seal bags with an iron. Makes about 4 tub teas.

Super long, flirty lashes that defy the boundaries of mascara. But the secret is out of the makeup bag, and semi-permanent eyelash extensions are making a glamorous sweep across the Valley. What do you need to know before you go? Here’s the long and short of it.

Just the Facts

Materials and varieties. Eyelash extensions are made of a pliable synthetic material designed with a natural curve and available in various thicknesses and lengths. Your eyelash specialist will likely choose the size and thickness most appropriate for your facial structure unless you request otherwise. Formaldehyde-free glue is used to adhere each synthetic lash to your own natural lash.

Application process. As the client, your part is easy. Individual extensions are applied to your own clean lashes while you recline on a massage or aesthetics table. The initial application of a full set takes 90 minutes to 2 hours. Touch-ups take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

Wear-time and maintenance. Extensions last 4 to 6 weeks depending on the life cycle of your natural lashes and how well you take care of them. Rubbing your eyes is a no-no as are oily makeup remover, waterproof mascara and glycolic cleansers and eye creams. Use of water-soluble mascara is acceptable and a gentle solution of one part baby shampoo to one part water is recommended to remove eye makeup. Because the average cycle of a natural lash is 90 to 100 days, touch ups are recommended every 2 to 3 weeks to fill in lost lashes.

Important tips. Though extremely safe if properly applied, extensions are not to be taken lightly and must be applied by a trained and certified specialist. When researching where to go, ask your technician what lash product they use and then find out the what training and certifications are required by the company. Lavish Lashes, NovaLash and Xtreme Lashes – popular choices among Valley lash techs – all require that professionals are properly trained before they will sell the products to them. Also, professionals must be licensed by the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology so have no qualms about asking to see a license.

Cost. In the Valley area, full sets average between $200 and $350 depending on where you go and built-in extras like complimentary touch-ups and homecare products. Most places offer package discounts for touch-ups, which run between $65 and $75.

Quick Tips

Be sure your lash technician is properly trained, certified and experienced with the lash products that he or she is using. While most lash manufacturers offer extensive professional training, only a few companies (Lavish Lashes and Xtreme Lashes among them) sell only to professionals who have completed a hands-on training course. Visit the manufacturer Web sites, do your homework and, if you can, get word-of-mouth recommendations before going under the tweezers.

Wait at least 12 hours (24 hours if you can) after getting your lashes before getting water on them.

Steer clear of glycolic cleansers and heavy duty eye creams.

If you must use mascara (most people don’t), stay away from waterproof varieties and oil-based eye-makeup remover. Use water-soluble mascara only on tips and use a gentle, non-oily solution or gel-based cleanser to remove it. Avoid cotton balls and use fingertips instead.

Treat your lashes gently. Try not to rub your eyes or tug on your lashes. Never use an eyelash curler with lash extensions.

Limit your time in steam rooms and saunas to short spurts.

If you decide that eyelash extensions are not for you, have them professionally removed. Most places do not charge for extension removal.

Lia Rowland is the spa director at the The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. Here, she shares tips on how to incorporate some rest and relaxation into our lives on a regular basis.

Deep breathing – Never underestimate the power of deep breathing, and of taking just five minutes to reframe your mind. A simple walk in the middle of the day can bring new energy to the remainder of your daily tasks at hand.

Daily yoga – Start each day with simple stretches, awakening the mind and body. You don’t need to practice elaborate poses, or use extensive equipment. Simply do what feels good!

Aromatherapy – Find the scents that appeal to you, and use them to awaken, relax, calm or inspire. Lemongrass is a typically invigorating scent, while neroli is calming and great for anxiety. Lavender is thought to improve sleep. There is no perfect scent – find what works for you!

Simple at-home spa – Honey is a wonderful, powerful hydrating ingredient, found in every grocery store. Mix equal parts honey and salt for a mild exfoliant for the body, or sub sugar for the face. Olive oil is wonderful for hydrating and conditioning nails and hands.

Ambiance – Much of the spa experience comes from the setting, and the calming music and lighting. Take this same approach to your soothing “spa” space, and find a place in your home or office that you can outfit with soft lighting and soothing music. Buy a comfy robe and spa slippers, even flowers if you want. These small touches can help transport you from your “regular” life into the spa mentality.

I could never eat peas as a kid. Ugh, just the thought of those mushy little legumes made my throat close up in fear. Now as a bona fide grownup, peas don’t scare me so much, especially because of their handy use as an ice pack. Frozen peas can help reduce swelling and puffy eyes not only because of their icy effects but because the small round pearls can settle into the shape around the eyes. In honor of all that is green and good and a little mushy in the world, we encourage you to give peas a chance.

Here’s what you need:

Bag of frozen baby peas

Soft hand towel

Here’s what you do:

Remove the bag of peas from the freezer and let it thaw for about 10 minutes so the ice-cold package doesn’t redden skin. Lay back, cover your eyes with the towel, place the bag on top and visualize calming green thoughts for about 5 minutes. P.S., Not only is green considered a calming hue but is also the color of the heart chakra and is our center for compassion and unconditional love.

As second in command only to the bride and the occasional wedding planner, you are the official high-ranking queen of pink taffeta, last-minute mascara touch-ups, teary-eyed wedding toasts and most importantly, the bridal shower. And for a party worthy of your title, a spa bridal shower is just the place to pamper the bride in luxury before her walk down the red carpet into matrimonial bliss.

Here are just a few nuptial-worthy spa locales:

Spa her up

Treat the bride to a quintessential spa day at Willow Stream at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Have the girls arrive early for a relaxing yoga class, followed by a waterfall massage in the eucalyptus gratto pool, healthy lunches, a heavenly spa or salon treatment of each girl’s choice and end the day sipping prickly pear margaritas at the rooftop pool. With treatments starting at $69, the spa can accommodate groups up to 25.

Blow her away

Who doesn’t love a great blowout? Put your pretty heads together for a girl’s blowout party at Drybar at Scottsdale Quarter. They provide the blowouts and the drinks and the party planner will handle the rest. Start your night there or make it the main event. Either way, for an easy $35 each, you’ll bond to chick flicks and walk out with great a head of hair

Sweeten her day

For a truly rockin’ girlie time, arrange for the Sweet Girls Getaway bachelorette party at any one of the three Dolce Salon & Spa Valley locations. Upon arrival, you and the girls will relax in an exclusive suite in a robe and slippers and enjoy a delicious array of treats. Packages start at $100 per person depending on how you decide to spin it.

Take her on a flight

The Wine and Coffee Flights at the VH Spa for Vitality + Health at Hotel Valley in Scottsdale offers a fun way to bond over mini spa services without breaking the bank. Each flight pairs a wine with a select 30-minute spa service for $65 plus 20% service charge. Choose from a Chardonnay Full-Body Sugar Scrub, Massage or Mini Facial complete with a glass of wine served after your service. Ask about their Spa Parties too — another great way to save!

Shower her in luxury

Invite the girls to a bridal shower pool-side at the heavenly Joya Spa at Montelucia Resort in Paradise Valley. Reserve one of the spa’s exquisite private suites, most of which open out to the adults-only Joya Terrace Pool and look out over Camelback Mountain. Suites can be reserved for a half day or full day and when the cost is split among the group, the view alone is totally worth it.

Make her blush

For an intimate evening of chitchat and beauty, host the shower at Cloud 9 Salon & Spa in Tempe. Pick the date and have the girls schedule their choice of services. You provide the chitchat, and the spa concierge will coordinate the visit.

Sweep her away

Finally, if a tropical getaway is in order, hula on over to the Hawaiian Experience Spa with in Scottsdale or Chandler. They can accommodate up to groups of 10 and will tailor the party completely to your needs.
