Arizona Super Bowl Spa Guide

Arizona is home to more than just 2008’s biggest football bash. That’s right sports fans! Dotted among the groomed greens, the mountain trails and the mega sports venues, the Grand Canyon state is home to some of the top destinations in the country for unadulterated relaxation. And many of those blissful spots are just a hot rock’s throw from the University of Phoenix Stadium. Just in time for the biggest sports weekend in Arizona’s history (or at least that we can remember!), we’ve slammed together the ultimate guide to relaxation beyond the football field.

Resort Spas Near the Stadium

Spa Botanica at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa, Glendale. This spa is so spanking new that we haven’t even slipped our manicured toes into their spa slippers yet. Opened in October, the eight-room retreat hides a couple’s suite, private outdoor pool and whirlpool, fitness equipment and a menu packed with indulgent spa services.

Red Door Spa at the Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa, Litchfield Park. Southwestern style meets Red Door opulence at this relaxation destination. The two-level spa boasts 15 treatment rooms including a spacious couple’s hideaway, salon, separate men’s and women’s outdoor whirlpools and lazy lap pool flanked by cushy lounge chairs and lush greenery.

Revive Spa at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix. When you’re ready to venture outside of the Glendale area, the Desert Ridge area is a worthy trek. Desert Ridge Marketplace — a shopping, dining and entertainment powerhouse — is adjacent to the JW Marriott, home of the 28,000-square-foot, two-story Revive Spa where you’ll find 41 treatment rooms (for real!), a salon, fitness center, expansive pool framed by private spa cabanas, eat-in bistro with a full bar and amenities galore.

Treatments Worth the Trek

Willow Stream at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Scottsdale. Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon National Park is arguably the eighth wonder of the world. But it’s a 20-mile-round-trip trek that winds deep into the remote Havasupai Reservation. Willow Stream has captured the experience not only in the spa’s stunning architecture but also in the Havasupai Body Oasis Experience a 120-minute journey sans the hiking boots. The treatment starts with a dip in the massaging waterfalls oasis pool followed by a eucalyptus foot bath, a gentle chamomile body exfoliation, herbal bath, an aromatherapy wrap with a face and scalp acupressure massage and a final dosing warm oil massage application (120 minutes, $319).

Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort at Gainey Ranch, Scottsdale. Should jet lag be nipping at your heels, trust Spa Avania to guide you into a gentle time transition. The only retreat to orchestrate music, light, diet and therapies to the time of day, the spa offers an immersion in the Arizona experience with their exclusive Desert Essence Wrap. Soothing, nourishing and deeply hydrating, the wrap incorporates Trehalose extract from the native cactus to retain moisture in the skin (60 minutes, $150).

Golden Door Spa at The Boulders Resort, Carefree. Turquoise has long been prized by Native Americans as the color of protection, self-confidence and positive energy. Capturing the native cultures that shaped our southwestern heritage, the Golden Door offers the self-affirming Turquoise Wrap treatment. Hopi blue cornmeal is used to buff skin, which is then wrapped in a warm, ionized turquoise clay. During the wrap, the therapist performs a rain stick ritual and uses traditional essential oils to cleanse the spirit. The treatment culminates with a full-body honey masque and a steam (50 minutes, $170).

VH Spa for Vitality + Health at Hotel Valley Ho, Scottsdale. Snappy 50s tunes warm you up in the locker room while a cool palatte of brilliant blues set the hip vibe of this boutique retreat. VH Spa’s claim to fame is Quantum Biofeedback, which uses bio-energetics to deliver a renewed sense of balance and wellness (60 minutes, $150).

Day Spas Near the Action

Not only is Phoenix metro home to a huge number of top-notch resort spas but the West Valley area is sprinkled with affordable, quality day spas and studios that offer massage, body therapies, facials and beauty services. From express treatments to full day spa packages, these places pack a mighty punch for the price.

Zethina Cosmetics & Skin Care, Glendale. Just across the street in Arrowhead’s new Citadelle plaza is Zethina’s cute-as-heck boutique and day spa. Makeup artist Zethina (yes, she goes by just her first name) is a celebrity in these parts and her new digs are the place for makeup lessons and applications as well as massage, skincare and body therapies. Her custom-blended mineral makeup is a secret among locals so trust me, stop by if you’re in need of a good foundation.

Speaking of locals, private beauty studios are were we go when we feel the need for the red carpet treatment. Catty corner to the Arrowhead Towne Center Mall is the Beauty Studios, home to independent hair stylists, skincare professionals, makeup artists and massage therapists in private suites. SkinOvations is our pick for skincare and waxing services, while Massage-ology is awesome for a soothing rubdown. Pop into Shear Bliss Hair Design for an emergency bang trim or a sleek event updo.

Glow Med Spa, a cozy medical spa for everything from bye-bye-wrinkle injections to massage. And Absolutely Chic Skin Care at Blitz Salon for custom facials and expert waxing.

Athena Salon & Day Spa, Glendale. On the outside chance you’ve been struck by a bad hair day, we’d definitely recommend a trip to Athena. They offer every beauty service under the Arizona sun, from hair and nails, to massage and facials, to body wraps and their signature head-to-toe full-body treatments.

Dolce Salon & Spa, Peoria. Finally, no ultimate spa guide would be complete without mentioning Dolce. Chic, contemporary and a whopping 29,000 square feet, the new Dolce Arrowhead location offers the full shebang of beauty and spa services. Try The Spa Breather package, which boasts a facial, massage, spa pedicure and lunch (3 hours, $240). Locations also in Scottsdale and Chandler.
